Bowest’ner Team
Bowest’ner Team Lead, Marketing Lead, Photographers & Writers
Information Session: May 13, 2013, 6 – 8 pm, Bowness Community Centre
The Bowest’ner is run by a small but dedicated group of volunteers along with the help of one paid and highly talented editor – THANK YOU BRANDI! It’s delivered to over 5000 homes in Bowness and is further circulated through the library and other community organizations. We are in urgent need of people to help out. If we don’t get the help we need in the next few months, the next Bowest’ner may be your last.
On May 13, 6 – 8 pm there will be an information session about the positions available. We urge you to come and see where you can get involved. Please contact volunteer@mybowness.com for more details.
Great Big Bowness Clean-Up, May 26
Volunteer Are Urgently Needed
Three categories of volunteers are needed to support this event:
1) Strong Volunteers: You like doing the dirty work! – Help unload vehicles
2) Traffic Volunteers: Direct traffic because it gets busy out there!
3) Bowness Ambassadors: Promote the BCA and it’s programs and services to people waiting in line.
Run Bowness 10k, June 9
This is a really fun Sunday morning event for the whole family. If you’re not running, come help out and bring the kiddies along! We need 50+ people to make this event a success. Volunteers needed for this event:

Farmers Market: Bowness Commons
A wonderful group of people have come together to make a Farmers Market a reality in Bowness. They are currently researching some ideas and working on some solutions. If you want to help out, you are cordially invited to come to the next meeting, May 14, 2013, at 7 pm at the Bowness Community Association. Bowness Community Centre, Main Hall: Volunteers are NEEDED
We are so excited to bring this to Bowness! These dances feature a live DJ playing the hottest dance mixes for children ages 6 – 12. There will be pop, treats and prizes: all of this and more in a safe supervised community space. Tickets are available at the door and are $5 each, $3 if the parents have a BCA Membership. You can purchase memberships at the door; $5 each. There are volunteer opportunities available for parents that would like to get their children in for free. Great Big Bowness Clean Up: VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED
May 26, 2013, parking lot across from the Bowness Legion, 9 am – 1 pm
Bring your junk to the annual Great Big Bowness Cleanup 9 am – 1 pm at the Bow Centre Mall area by the recycling bins. There will be several opportunities to recycle and the good folks from the Bowness Legion will also be there so you can donate your good stuff towards their Garage Sale which happens the following Saturday, June 1. Unfortunately, we cannot provide pickup service. Please contact the BCA office at 403-288-8300 for full details.
This is a free service provided by volunteers of the BCA, and Bowwest Community Resources.

Big Bowness Garage Sale: Parade of Garage Sales
June 1, 2013, 9 am – 4 pm, Bowness Legion
We’re so excited! This is our first ever Big Bowness Parade of Garage Sales and who better to kick it all off but our very own Bowness Legion! This is your opportunity to be a part of a community wide event and clear out your house/yard at the same time. We don’t have all the details yet but there will be interactive maps available for android and iPhone and community wide promotions. There are a few ways to participate:
1. Take out the garbage – literally – Bring your garbage to the Big Bowness Clean Up on May 26. Please see the rules above.
2. Donate unwanted items to the Bowness Legion at the Big Bowness Clean Up on May 26 for their fundraising garage sale.
3. Have a Garage/Yard Sale of your own by registering at bownessgaragesale@gmail.com.
4. Shop your heart out by picking up a community map or link at the Bowness Legion, Friday May 31 or Saturday June 1.

The BCA is very happy to sponsor this family run for the 3rd year in a row! Bring the whole family down to the community centre for a great day in the sun and enjoy the beauty of Bowness and the Bow River. New this year: the Bowness school with the most runners wins $500 for their school thanks to Cadence Café! There are some great prizes and the Top 3 men and women in both the 10k & 5k plus the fastest kids in the Cadence Mile get a GIC from Servus Credit Union! BOWFORT ROAD INTERCHANGE OPEN HOUSE
May 8, 2013, 5 – 7 pm, Bowness Community Centre
The City of Calgary’s Transportation department is hosting a come and go Open House at the Bowness Community Centre, on the Bowfort Road/TransCanada Grade Separated Interchange. The City will present an amended design. This may also include an interim solution to the traffic issues. This will have a HUGE impact on the community. At this point Bownesians can really influence the City’s plan for the area. Let them know what you think!

Bowmont Park Public Open House
May 22, 2013, 3 – 8 pm, Main Hall, Bowness Community Centre
City of Calgary Parks want your input! Join them Wednesday, May 22, 3–8 p.m., at the Bowness Community Centre to find out what redevelopment is planned for Bowmont Park. The City will also be discussing off lease boundaries and looking for ideas around the redevelopment of the Klippert Gravel Pit. If you are unable to attend the open house, the information presented will be available online after May 22. An online survey pertaining to development of the east end of the park will be posted online from May 23 to June 24. Please visit calgary.ca/parks for project updates and to fill out the survey.

LEAF OFF!
Did you know that you can drop off yard waste free of charge* at any of the City of Calgary Landfill Sites from now until June 2? This includes leaves, plants, trimmings, branches etc for composting. They can either be loose or in paper yard bags. The closest landfill to Bowness is the Spyhill site at 69 Street & 112 Avenue NW. Call 311 for landfill hours or other site addresses. You can also visit www.calgary.ca/waste.
*Commercial customers will be subject to regular fees. There is no charge for dropping off residential yard waste unless you are bringing other materials for disposal at the same time.
Teens need something to do?
The Boys and Girls Club of Bowness has a fantastic Teen Drop-In EVERY DAY; open gym, 3 – 4 pm and computer lab, 3 – 5:30pm. There’s also homework help available for Grades 8, 9, & 10! AND there is a Teen Drop-In night EVERY Friday 7 – 10 pm. Contact the club for full details.
