Position Description: Community Hub Coordinator

Reports to: Executive Director

Hours of Work: Full-Time, Various hours based on 30 hours per week.


Position Overview:

Governed by the vision, mission and values of the Bowness Community Association (BCA) the Community Hub Coordinator is responsible for the implementation of the community hub strategy and is an integral part of the Bowness engagement strategy.  Key accountabilities include project management and planning of facility upgrades in line with resident wants and needs, supporting resident engagement and leadership and encouraging collective impact with partners in the facility and community.  This position will work closely with the BCA engagement team and The City of Calgary Community Social Worker. The position is funded by the Community Hubs Initiative; a partnership between The City of Calgary, Rotary, and United Way of Calgary and Area to prototype and activate Community Hubs in priority locations across Calgary.


This position requires a commitment of 30 hours per week, primarily in the office, but hours may be divided between office, home, meetings and events so flexibility in schedule is important.  This position offers a great work environment, flexibility, and most importantly an opportunity to have an impact in the community.


Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor Degree or equivalent experience in community development or related field
  • Exceptional communications skills both written and oral with experience using a variety of mediums
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment with management, staff and other stakeholders
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite including word, excel, and Microsoft Outlook, PowerPoint
  • Well-developed time management, project management and organizational skills
  • Motivated, ambitious and able to work independently
  • Willingness to help in any way possible!
  • Experience in the non-profit sector is preferred


Accountabilities and Expectations: 


  1. Administration and Customer Service
  • Respond to all community hub related enquiries providing exceptional customer service to all stakeholders
  • Prepare reports for BCA staff, partners, Board of Directors, residents and other stakeholders
  • Ensure compliance with all BCA policies and procedures and maintain documentation
  • Support other staff when and where required as part of the BCA engagement team
  • Act as the point of contact for residents and stakeholders for community hub related issues
  • Stay informed on BCA and community activities to provide information at the community centre office


  1. Project Management
  • Create action plans in coordination with ED and Board of Directors on facility renovations
  • Facilitate resident voice on the design and use of spaces at the Bowness Community Centre
  • Conduct research specific to community gathering places on current models and best practices
  • Monitor budgets related to the community hub renovation and revitalization projects
  • Act as point of contact for partners space and program needs at the Bowness Community Centre
  • Work with architects on design, tender and construction documentation
  • Implement initiatives that create a welcoming and inclusive community space
  • Implement new programs at the community centre in line with resident feedback and BCA goals
  • Conduct research and support the ED in grant submissions for operations and capital funding for the hub
  • Support data collection and evaluation on community evaluation


  1. Community Development
  • Organize opportunities for residents to gather and connect
  • Facilitate Vital Signs and the implementation of follow up strategies encouraging local action
  • Support resident volunteers and leaders in project planning from idea inception through evaluation
  • Build community capacity and influence by enabling people to develop confidence and leadership skills
  • Foster and encourage collaboration and support for common community goals
  • Research and evaluate opportunities for programs and services to fill gaps at the community level
  • Identify priority projects aligned with the BCA strategic plan and community hubs initiative


  1. Partnerships
  • Encourage collaboration among stakeholders groups in Bowness
  • Identify and evaluate partnership opportunities for co-location and programming at the community centre
  • Participate and lead community hub meetings
  • Promote cross pollination of various groups and activities in the community
  • Support The City of Calgary Social Worker in identifying and developing ways of creating hub culture
  • Connect residents and stakeholders in catchment area to appropriate supports and services
  • Attend regular community of practice meetings
